How to choose a Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider: three things that matter most

Choosing Supported Independent Living is one of the biggest decisions a participant and their family will make. Here are the three things we tell every family to look at — including when they’re comparing us against other providers.
1. Compatibility beats convenience
A vacancy that’s available tomorrow isn’t a good match unless the people are. Ask how the provider assesses compatibility between housemates — routines, sensory needs, communication styles, interests. A good provider will arrange meet-and-greets and trial stays before anyone commits, and will be honest when a match isn’t right.
2. Staffing consistency is everything
Research consistently shows continuity of care is one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes for people with disability. Ask: how many different workers will come through the house in a week? What’s the staff turnover rate? Who covers when someone is sick? You’re entitled to straight answers.
3. Understand what’s funded — and what happens when needs change
SIL funds the support people receive in the home; SDA (if you’re eligible) funds the specialist dwelling itself. Ask the provider to walk you through your roster of care, what happens if your needs increase, and how they communicate with your support coordinator and family. From 1 July 2026 all SIL providers must be registered — so also check their registration.
